Turmeric has been used for thousands of years as a spice and medicinal herb in India and is commonly found in Indian cuisine giving curry that lovely yellow colour. Curcumin, the main active ingredient in turmeric, is a strong antioxidant and powerful anti-inflammatory. Both are an important part of healthy aging.

Turmeric – or curcumin – is also said to help ease arthritis, protect the heart, boost the brain and my fight diabetes and cancer. It also improves your ability to digest fats, reducing gas and bloating, decreased congestion, and can improve skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and acne. There is approximately 200mg of curcumin in one teaspoon of fresh or ground turmeric.

When used in small amounts – 1/2 tsp – turmeric has a very light flavour so makes a healthy addition to the Lemon Turmeric Protein Smoothie.
